Western Michigan University hosted a very successful Fall 2012 Career Day at the Bernhard Center on October 18, 2012. The FPA of Michigan was one of only two sponsors among more than 100+ employers looking for exceptional candidates. As representatives of the FPA of Michigan, we were there to share with students the incredible opportunities within the financial planning profession. In addition, we also promoted the CFP® designation among the numerous financial service firms in attendance as partners in our profession.
Tom Rabaut and I enlisted help from the many financial services companies in attendance. We explained our goal to educate the students in our mutual field and asked them to direct students with questions to our table. As a result, many students came by to ask who or what we were all about, with some signing up for the evening’s career opportunity presentation.
As the WMU Career Day came to a close, the FPA of Michigan hosted a “Day in the Life” presentation attended by twelve interested students. Our presentation of the common “on-ramps” to a career in the financial planning profession was further aided by comments from a recruiter representing Thrivent Financial.
As a result:
– 18 Students expressed interest in Summer Internship Programs;
– 15 Students are interested in the WMU sponsored Externship Program in 2013; and
– 14 Students are looking for mentoring opportunities.
As members of the FPA of Michigan, if you are interested in working with a student in this capacity, please contact the Membership and Career Development Committee for additional information.
