Through a professional relationship established a few years ago with Western Michigan University’s Career Center, FPA of Michigan Member, TFG Advisors, completed its Second Annual Business Externship Program with nine students from the Haworth College of Business. For many students, an “externship” (which is very different from an “internship”) is a one or two-day work-shadow experience at a business or office that matches their career interests. The staff at TFG Advisors chose to make this externship experience more meaningful for the students in order to promote exciting career opportunities within the financial planning profession.
We decided to extend and personalize our externship program to a 3-day Intensive Hands-On Workshop which we conducted last week, May 22 – 24. Our goal was to introduce our WMU Externs to the basic concepts of financial life planning, investment advice, and wealth management, through the use of intensive hands-on educational sessions that dealt with concepts of Risk Management & Estate Planning, Cash Management, and Accumulation Goals & Retirement.
Based on feedback received from many of the Externs, the program, once again, exceeded student expectations:
“I really want to thank you for the amazing time I had at TFG Advisors this week. I really enjoyed the program that you helped put on for the Business Externship Program at Western Michigan University. TFG Advisors is a great company that I would really enjoy working for in the future. . . ”
One unexpected but welcomed outcome of our involvement in this program has been the recent hire of two summer interns from Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business. They are definitely a valuable addition to our summer staffing needs.
If you are interested in becoming involved in this program next year (information about the program usually begins to flow from WMU in December for May and June Externships the following Summer), or if you would like to know more about the Business Externship program at WMU, please contact the FPA of Michigan’s Membership and Career Development Committee.
